IRS Launches New Mobile App With Expanded Taxpayer Services

October 7, 2026

Managing your federal tax information from your phone just became easier.

The IRS has launched a new IRS mobile app, replacing the longtime IRS2Go app with an expanded set of features designed to give taxpayers more convenient access to tax information and account services. The new app became available September 25, 2026, and is free through the Apple App Store and Google Play.

What’s New With the IRS App?

For more than a decade, IRS2Go provided taxpayers with mobile access to services such as checking refund status and finding free tax preparation resources. The new IRS app retains those capabilities while adding secure access to selected features from the IRS Individual Online Account.

After securely signing in with ID.me credentials, taxpayers will be able to:

  • Check the status of a tax refund or amended return
  • View available account balance information
  • Make payments and review payment activity
  • View select IRS notices and letters
  • Access available tax records and transcripts
  • Manage certain profile and communication preferences
  • Access an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)

Some services remain available without signing in, including checking refund status, making certain payments, and finding free filing assistance.

Already Have IRS2Go?

Current IRS2Go users do not need to download a separate application. If automatic app updates are enabled on your device, IRS2Go will update to the new IRS app through the normal update process. Otherwise, users can manually update or download the new official app through the Apple App Store or Google Play.  The new IRS app is available in both English and Spanish.

Does the App Replace Your IRS Online Account?

No. The IRS app does not replace IRS.gov or the agency’s existing online accounts.  Instead, the app extends selected Individual Online Account services to mobile devices.

The full Individual Online Account, Business Tax Account, and Tax Pro Account remain available through IRS.gov. At launch however, the mobile app does not provide Business Tax Account or Tax Pro Account features.

The IRS has also indicated that it plans to add more capabilities and services to the mobile app over time.

Keep Security in Mind

With any new financial or tax-related app, taxpayers should be cautious about scams and look-alike applications.

The IRS recommends accessing the official app through verified links on IRS.gov or through its official Apple App Store and Google Play listings. Taxpayers should avoid downloading apps through advertisements or links received in unsolicited emails or text messages.

The IRS also reminds taxpayers that it will not request sensitive personal or financial information through unsolicited texts, emails, or pop-up messages.

More Tax Information at Your Fingertips

The transition to the new IRS mobile app is part of the agency’s broader effort to expand digital self-service options. For taxpayers, the update provides another way to handle routine tax tasks, access important records, and stay on top of IRS correspondence from a mobile device.
